Izmir University of Economics, Vocational School of Health Services, Medical Laboratory Techniques Program, who educates medical lab technicians, the secret heroes of laboratories that play an important role in diagnosis of diseases, celebrated Medical Laboratory Professionals Day.
Students of Medical Laboratory Techniques Program held a "The Importance of Medical Laboratories in the Diagnosis of Disease" titled poster exhibition in observance of the day. In addition, Emrah Kasap, Biochemistry Lab Technician at Izmir Tepecik Education and Research Hospital, University of Health Sciences, and Lab Technician Aslı Çolak Osmanoğlu talked about the duties sand responsibilities of medical laboratory technicians, hardships they face, and their rights as part of the event.
Kasap pointed out that medical laboratory played a key role at hospitals. Kasap said, “Lab technicians lay claim to specimens, whether it be a blood, urine, or any other specimen the doctor entrusts with, and sees them as individuals. We process the patients’ specimens and draw results. It is a complete process in its own. Therefore, we refuse to accept the assistant label. We are Medical Laboratory Technicians.”
Osmanoğlu, who talked about safety of labs, said, “I have colleagues who catch tuberculosis on the job, get hepatitis C when drawing blood. Self-protection is very important here. You absolutely need to wear your smock, gloves, mask, and safety glasses. If you fail to obey these rules, the law will not be able to protect you against any work-related accidents”.
