DESIGN GIVES LIFE TO CERAMICS
Mulled wine is getting warmer. Ceren Cengiz, Graduate of Department of Industrial Design, Faculty of Fine Arts and Design, Izmir University of Economics, came up with practical solutions for mulled wine lovers with her “Phyre Mulled Wine Kit” titled design. Cengiz, who received awards at National Packaging Design Student Competition and International World Design Competition, will be displaying her Phyre Mulled Wine Kit. Cengiz will be using some of the proceeds to offer design and ceramics education for children.
Cengiz stated that she combined ceramics, paintings, dance, and music in her designs and integrated traditionalism with creativity. Cengiz said that Turkey lacked design when it came to presenting mulled wine, and that she integrated her entrepreneurship skills with design and art and she wanted to pass this onto children.
'I Will Be Representing My Country with My Very Own Brand'
Cengiz mentioned that choosing ceramics as an elective while studying at IUE Department of Industrial Design added a new dimension to her vision. She stated the following:
“The wine needs to be served in a glass due to its nature. I wanted to put my senior project into practice as I was graduating from Izmir University of Economics. I got the mulled wine glasses made through blow method at Denizli Şişecam factory. I designed the heater to be made out of ceramics in order to heat the mulled wine. I’ve completed my graduate studies at Dokuz Eylül University, Department of Ceramics and Glass Design, and now started my Ph.D. studies. I combined my education in industrial design with ceramics and glass. I want to come up with new designs by using my creativity to represent my country with my own brand.”
Cengiz opened her first exhibition in Sığacık in August, and she decided to use the proceeds to conduct design and ceramics workshops for children. “I believe that the future of Turkish economy lies on becoming distinct with design. If children are instilled with this awareness, our accomplishments in the field of design will increase and improve”, said Cengiz.
