IZMIR FERRIES GET REDESIGNED BY IZMIR UNIVERSITY OF ECONOMICS

Izmir ferry boats will get touch up by academicians and students of Izmir University of Economics (IUE). Materials selection for the deck and visualization for Hasan Tahsin ferry boat, which is being built at Çeksan Shipyard by Izmir Metropolitan Municipality, is being carried out by IUE Yacht Design Master’s Program. The ferry boat, upon the completion of design work, will be setting sail and serving Izmir folks in September.
The project team consisted of Lecturers Asst. Prof. Dr. Emre Ergül, Asst. Prof.Dr. Can Özcan, Asst. Prof. Dr. Markus Wilsing, and master’s students Barış Karslıgil and Alperen Gören state that they planned the deck to be comfortably spacious.
Asst. Prof. Dr. Emre Ergül, Head of Yacht Design Program, gave information about the project. He said, “The main approach in selecting the materials was based on allowing the passengers an uninterrupted view of the bay. Therefore, we opted for kiosks and elevators to be light colors and upholstered with veneer with non-apparent textures. Likewise, the ceiling and vertical surfaces contribute to the continuity to the perception of indoors-outdoors. Darker colors were chosen for the floors.”
‘Accessible Ferry Boat ’
Ergül mentioned that they started out with 12 choices; 3 wood veneers and 4 chair colors, and then they eliminated those one by one. He said that they based their design on providing access to disabled people. Asst. Prof. Dr. Ergül stated the following:
“We did not leave it with elevators and corridors as stated in the lay out plan. Our design includes guide signs, grab bars, locks for wheelchairs, audio warning system. Also, Izmir Metropolitan Municipality plants a red flag for public and private sectors who takes measures to ease the lives of the disabled people. We applied for red flag for our disabled accessibility work. There is also a playground for children on deck. We will start working on Ahmet Piriştina and Kubilay once we are done with Hasan Tahsin Ferry Boat.”
