‘LET’S DRINK TO OUR HEALTH’

It has been emphasized that drinking water, essential to human life, played a major role in keeping the systems in the body, and the metabolism in balance, and all kinds of efforts should be made to preserve sources of fresh water. The experts are suggesting we should consume 8-10 glasses of water on a daily basis in order to flush out the toxins in our body and to maintain the fluid balance.
Urology Specialist Dr. Yavuz Selim Süral, Lecturer at IUE Vocational School of Health Sciences, pointed that fresh water sources were exhausted rapidly due to population growth and industrialization. He said, “The United Nations declared March 22 as ‘World Water Day’. Keeping water sources clean plays a vital role since our body is composed of an average of 60% water. Water plays a major role in functioning of the systems, organs, and cells in the body, and in keeping the metabolism in balance. All vital metabolic processes that take place in the cell can only happen if there is enough water in the cell.”
‘We Should Drink 8-10 Glasses of Water’
Süral stated that water consumption is important in terms of digestion, absorption of foods taken and flushing out the toxins, however people often forgot to drink water. Süral listed the below benefits of drinking water:
“Helps in digestion and prevents constipation, and lowers to chance to get bladder infection. Helps maintain the body heat. Helps keep your joints strong, healthy and lubricated. It boosts metabolism and immune system. Inadequate water consumption during cold weather weakens the immune system and makes us sick. Also, it helps increase the rate at which the body burns fat, and promotes the breakdown and elimination of fat cells. It promotes healthier, softer, brighter, and more elastic skin. The minerals in the water help us receive our minerals required daily for our body.”
Süral suggested drinking 8-10 glasses of water on a daily average, and due to increased physical activities and excess sweating in summer, body’s need for water increased, stated Süral. He said that people often forgot to drink water in busy life styles. “It is important to start the day with a glass of water in room temperature. We need to drink water throughout the day even we don’t feel thirsty. We need to keep a bottle of water at work and remind ourselves to drink via sticky notes. Instead of coffee and tea breaks at works you need to treat yourself a water break. You should also drink a glass of water before you go to sleep to maintain your body balance. If you forget to drink water, you can carry a bottle of water with you to remember. If you don’t like the taste of plain water, you can put a few drops of lemon juice or put cloves in it,” said Süral.
‘Tea-Coffee Place Strain on Kidneys’
Süral mentioned that none of the other beverages can substitute for water, and caffeinated drinks such as tea, coffee, coke is considered diuretics which have toll on the kidneys and cause dehydration in the body.
