THE TARGET IS BECOMING A WORLD UNIVERSITY
İzmir University of Economics Board of Trustees President and İzmir Chamber of Commerce Chairman Ekrem Demirtaş made a speech in the ceremony and said that the target was to become a world university.
Deputy Governor Nevzat Ergün, İzmir Chief of Police Ercüment Yılmaz, Provincial Director of Agriculture Ahmet Güldal and many guests attended the 9th Foundation Anniversary organized in İzmir University of Economics Conference Hall. IUE Rector Prof. Dr. Attila Sezgin, who made the opening speech of the ceremony, stated that the university had become a higher education institution, which they were very much proud of in every aspect and said that they had a big mission with more than 6 thousand students.
İzmir Chamber of Commerce Chairman and İzmir University of Economics Board of Trustees President Ekrem Demirtaş began his speech by telling the tough foundation story of İzmir University of Economics and said that they had written a story of success in 9 years.
Ekrem Demirtaş said, “We founded İzmir University of Economics with superhuman efforts. We will pass away one day. Our busts and names will remain. Just like Piriştina’s. We will say ‘We founded this university’ proudly with our Board of Trustees members, rector, academicians, and personnel.”
President Ekrem Demirtaş stated that the quality of education was much more important than buildings and underlined that the target was not Turkey but the whole world. Demirtaş indicated that they aimed to become a world university and said, “We have 69 academicians from 21 countries, 29 students from 17 countries. One day we will have students from 72 nationalities. The aim of our country is ‘Year 2023, Turkey is the Global Power’. We are raising students that will contribute to this aim.”
Rector Prof. Dr. Attila Sezgin stated that the construction of Faculty of Fine Arts and Design building was going to be completed in 2010 – 2011 academic year and they would open three new undergraduate five new graduate programs. Prof. Dr. Attila Sezgin told that they applied to open Faculty of Law and said, “Our Faculty of Arts and Sciences added Department of Sociology in its departments, and it offers double diploma program in Department of Psychology in collaboration with State University of New York in the USA. The Graduate School of Social Sciences will begin to accept students for two new graduate programs ‘Business Administration for Managers’ and ‘Derivatives Exchange’”.
Prof. Dr. Sezgin indicated that İzmir University of Economics was among the mostly preferred foundation universities in Turkey and said, “It is the result of the importance we give to education. In Turkey averagely, a teacher has 29 students but at our University, it is 14. Our final aim is to create a world university with high standards in line with the dreams of our founders.”
Following the speeches, the winners of the 6th International Student Conference and Caricature Competition received their awards. Erkan Onur ranked first, Semra Ünlüsoy ranked second, and Utku Mustafa Sönmez ranked the third in the competition. The famous caricaturist Erdil Yaşaroğlu presented the awards of the winners of “Footballmania: Fanaticism in Football” Competition.
After the award ceremony, Appointment and Promotion Ceremony of the academic staff took place. Ekrem Demirtaş and Prof. Dr. Attila Sezgin gowned the academicians. The ceremony came to an end with the music and dance shows of İzmir University of Economics students. The guests attended the cocktail that took place in İzmir Konağı.
