Returned to Izmir with three awards
The Young Translators Competition organized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Directorate for EU Affairs was marked by the success of Izmir University of Economics (IUE) Department of English Translation and Interpreting students. Competing in the English category with 90 students from 41 universities, IUE students won three awards and came out on top. Fourth-year student Özgür Ceyhan won the first prize with his translation of a technical text on European Union (EU) legislation. Berra Okudurlar, who competed in the same category, came second, while Zeynep Erman won the incentive award.
The Young Translators Competition, which was organized for senior students studying in translation and interpreting and translation studies departments of universities, was held in English, German and French. A total of 125 students from 41 universities participated in the competition, 90 students in English, 18 in German and 17 in French.
IUE students, who won the awards in the English category by achieving great success in the competition where ambitious names from all over Turkey participated, proved once again how good an education they received. All students who ranked in the competition will receive their awards at a ceremony to be held in the coming days. Özgür Ceyhan, who came first in the competition, will go to Brussels, the capital of Belgium, to visit the EU institutions together with the winners of the other language categories.
Prof. Dr. Neslihan Yetkiner, Dean of IUE Faculty of Arts and Sciences, expressed their great pride and happiness as a university and congratulated all the students who received awards. Prof. Dr. Nihal Yetkin Karakoç, Head of IUE Department of English Translation and Interpreting, stated that they had been proud of winning the first prize in the Young Translators Competition before, but this year they reached the top of the success chart with the award of 3 students who participated in the competition and said, "This success has been achieved thanks to all the professors in the department who have been teaching them and preparing them in the best way for this competition, as well as Asst. Prof. Dr. Ilgın Aktener and Research Assistant Aslı Melike Soylu. Aslı Melike Soylu, who is also a graduate of our department, was also the winner of the competition in 2022. We have a well-equipped, strong staff in our department who get along very well with each other. One of the most important factors that lead us to success is this exemplary unity and team spirit. Our students have shown us how well they are trained at our University and that we will see them in very good places in the future. I am proud of them and congratulate them wholeheartedly.”
