‘Development Workshop’ for high school students
Students of Izmir University of Economics (IUE) Vocational School established a "Development Workshop", including a modern library, mediation tables, wall and board games, in the Karabağlar Ataturk Vocational and Technical Anatolian High School, where approximately 1,800 young people study at. IUE students, who could not stand idle by the needs of high school students, provided all needs with the support of Izmir Chamber of Commerce (IZTO) 67th Building Construction and Restoration Committee, and made the designs themselves. Young people, who collected nearly 500 books and created an extraordinary Development Workshop with their special wall and table games for personal development, were appreciated with their exemplary behavior. Initially, the demolition and repair operations in the area within the school were carried out as part of the works initiated within the scope of the "Development Workshop Project" established within the IUE Vocational School and growing rapidly with the support of the Social Responsibility Club students. Later, this area was redesigned by the students of IUE Interior Design and Furniture and Decoration Program students.
A RICH CONTENT
Bookcases, reading and mediation tables and playgrounds were put into practice. A simultaneous book donation campaign was organized, resulting in a rich content of approximately 500 books. The shelves and furniture required for the workshop were also produced by IUE students. The works that were personally examined on-site by Burçin Önder, Director of IUE Vocational School, Committee Chair Barış Öncü and academics, were completed in a short time and was offered to students before schools were opened.
“EDUCATION IS NOT ONLY ACADEMIC KNOWLEDGE”
Stating that they are happy to realize an exemplary project, Director Burçin Önder said, “Our students showed great efforts to create the Development Workshop in their time outside of class. They took care of every detail, from the book campaign to where the shelves would be located. Of course, while doing all these, the support of IZTO members ensured that the workshop was completed as soon as possible. We thank them very much for all their support. As Vocational School, we do not see education as academic knowledge only.
We also want our young people to produce projects, to establish partnerships with its stakeholders in Izmir, to be sensitive about the problems around. We take steps in this direction and guide our students. Our project, which enables high school students to have a modern center, is one of the best examples of this.”
