İlayda Karakuş, Senior at Department of Fashion and Textile Design, Faculty of Arts and Design, Izmir University of Economics (IUE) is both ice skating and designing costumes for her team at the same time. Karakuş, who is an ice skater at Synchronized Ice Skating Team of Izmir Metropolitan Municipality, designs costumes for her team.
Karakuş had ben ice-skating since 2010. “I have started ice skating 8 years ago at Ice Sports Center within Aşık Veysel Recreation Center run by Izmir Metropolitan Municipality. Later, I was chosen on the synchronized team. Our team is called, “Team Spectrum”. After talking to my teammates, I started to design costumes last year thanks to the education I receive at my department. I created two costume designs form my team already,” said İlayda Karakuş.
Karakuş reported that she was inspired by the music, her team coaches Caner Çalık and Neşe Hünerli have chosen, when she designed the costumes. She said that her team came in second place in the Senior Category at National Synchronized Ice Skating Championship that was held in January. Karakuş, who stated that she would work on designing costumes when she graduated, said, “My teammates express their comfort in the costumes I designed. Designing costumes excites me very much and it makes me happy. Since I am an ice skater myself, I know the needs of my teammates in terms of a costume. That helps my designs to be more comfortable.”
