Sustainability theme in university-industry collaboration
Next generation of designers will work on sustainable fashion thanks to the collaboration between Department of Fashion and Textile Design, Faculty of Fine Arts and Design, Izmir University of Economics (IUE) and Yeşim Textile. Seniors of IUE Department of Fashion and Textile Design will use the fabrics manufactured by Yeşim Textile and create designs on sustainability. Students will attend workshops in Izmir and Bursa.
Students will also be able to perform their internship at Yeşim Textile as part of the protocol signed by Prof. Ender Yazgan Bulgun, Dean, IUE Faculty of Fine Arts and Design, and Dilek Cesur from Yeşim Textile.
The first workshop took place with the attendance of last year students and officials of Yeşim Textile. Asst. Prof. Arzu Vuruşkan, Lecturer at IUE Department of Fashion and Textile Design, gave information about the protocol and the workshop. Asst. Prof. Vuruşkan stated that they raised creative, problem solving, and environmentally-conscious young designers. “We are raising professional leaders who are conscious about changing and transforming social values, have critical thinking skills, and are entrepreneurial. We believe that young people will contribute to sustainable society and environment with their designs,” said Asst. Prof. Vuruşkan.
Stating that they would be working on sustainability concept in line with the protocol they signed with Yeşim Textile, Vuruşkan said that designers from the company will be sharing their ideas and practices with students as part of the “sustainable fashion” project. Vuruşkan also said that students would be attending a two-day workshop in Bursa in March. “Students will be provided support with topics such as design patterns. Students will be able to choose any fabric they want from the company. Their designs will be displayed at the graduation fashion show on June 11, and then at an exhibition in Bursa,” said Asst. Prof. Vuruşkan.
