Prof. Dr. Murat Aşkar, Rector of Izmir University of Economics (IUE), Prof. Dr. Yusuf Hakan Abacıoğlu, Dean of IUE Faculty of Medicine, and Lecturer Burçin Önder, Director of IUE Vocational School, met with Surgeon Cüneyt Tuğrul, Chairman of the Sağkal Association, and got detailed information about the activities carried out by the Association.
The SağKal Association established a rehab center, called Umut Atölyesi (Hope Workshop) for female oncology patients in Izmir who are receiving radiation therapy and are financially disadvantaged. The rehab center hopes to help women who are diagnosed with breast cancer overcome their psychological trauma during and after their treatment. In this project, also supported by Izmir Metropolitan Municipality, the Association, who embraces female oncology patients in Balçova Healthy Living Social Rehabilitation Support Center, aims to both increase awareness about breast cancer and support female patients, who are receiving treatment and are financially disadvantaged. Patients stay at the Center free of charge and their mental health is supported in Hope Workshop. The Center in Balçova holds various activities and events regularly to help women in every way they can. Regular training courses are conducted for patients and patient's relatives, including personal development and vocational trainings. They are offered opportunities to engage in hobbies and interests to keep them busy so they do not focus about their illness and can cope with it better.
Surgeon Cüneyt Tuğrul, Chairman of the Sağkal Association, who believes people can live if they choose to do so, mentioned the benefits of students of IUE Faculty of Medicine getting in touch with the patients staying at the Center, and expressed their pleasure about the visit to the Association.
