The audio description seminar of department of translation and interpreting
At the seminar titled “Audio Description as a Type of Translation and SEBEDER*” hosted by IUE Department of English Translation and Interpreting we were informed about audio description which can simply be defined as describing the visuals for the visually impaired. Audio Description supporting the visually impaired’s right to access art was covered with examples at the Seminar of Department of English Translation and Interpreting.
Olgun Yılmaz, Lawyer and Board Member of SEBEDER, informed the participants about the mission, function and the goals of SEBEDER at the seminar students, academicians, librarians and the visually impaired gathered to get informed. Emine Kolivar, Audio Description Specialist, explained the standardization practices in audio description for the visually impaired, and the obstacles by giving various examples from movies with audio description. Following the presentations, the movie “Cuckoo” directed by award-winning Director Kaan Atilla Taşkın and described for the visually impaired within the body of SEBEDER was screened.
Prof. Dr. Neslihan Kansu Yetkiner, Head of Department of English Translation and Interpreting, stated that the aim of this departmental seminar is to give information to the audience with different backgrounds about audio description, which is regarded as a different type of translation, and to raise awareness on the issue of “media accessibility which is a right of the visually impaired”. We had a fruitful seminar in which the students, academicians from different universities, librarians, and the visually impaired exchanged ideas with the members of SEBEDER.
