ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN STRETCHING FROM IZMIR TO LONDON
Young IUE architects are going to display their urban design, they based over tweets, in England. Students of Department of Architecture, Faculty of Fine Arts and Design, Izmir University of Economics will be representing Izmir at the “pop up city” themed design festival hosted by University of Westminster in London.
Students, under the guidance of Asst. Prof. Dr. Güzden Varinlioğlu, Lecturer, IUE Department of Architecture, will participate in the festival with their pop up city themed urban design which received the most and the least number of tweets in London. The design, created by the team Eco-Fab, consisting of students Mert Sartık, Elfin Ulupınar, Furkan Üğütmen, Erman Eskiköy, Seyit Koyuncu, Murat Kumbaracı, Berfin Özel, Çağla Balaban, Gözde Damla Turhan, Sadık Aksu, and Argun Tanrıverdi, will be exhibited at University of Westminster’s FabFest on July 2-9, 2017.
Asst. Prof. Dr. Varinlioğlu, who gave information about the festival, reported that students’ design was based on popularity that emerges out of nowhere and disappears in an instant. Varinlioğlu said, “Urban designs are being created by using the latest technologies in the festival. Our team gathered the data of locations that received the most tweets in London, and created a 3-D design. The correlation between the places with the most and with the least tweets inspired us. We designed an up and down architectural form, and had to transform that into a 2.5x3 meter cardboard structure as a festival requirement. Our design will be re-sized and exhibited in London. Our students will take a stance against standardization and becoming the same with their design”.
