EXPO MARK AT ITS 12TH YEAR OF ESTABLISHMENT
Izmir University of Economics, the first Foundation University of Aegean Region, celebrated 12th anniversary of its establishment with a spectacular ceremony. Presentation of a t-shirt with a slogan of “We Believe, We Will Win” on it to Ekrem Demirtaş, President of the Board of Trustees, by Foreign national students from 32 different countries with EXPO scholarships at IUE, marked the ceremony.
President Ekrem Demirtaş, who was co-hosting the ceremony with Prof. Dr. Tunçdan Baltacıoğlu, Rector of IUE, stated that the University, which ranked in 5th place nationwide in Entrepreneurship Index, left its crawling stage behind and started running already. The rectors of various universities, Prof. Dr. Attila Sezgin, former Rector of IUE and Honorary Member of Board of Trustees, William Buttigieg, Izmir’s British Consul, Cerasela Nicolaş, Izmir’s Romanian Consul General, Mustafa Türkmenoğlu, Coordinator Head of Aegean Exporters’ Union, academicians, members of Izmir Chamber of Commerce and Izmir Chamber of Commerce Education and Health Foundation attended the ceremony that took place at the Conference Hall.
President Demirtaş told about the establishment process in his speech and pointed out that the university, which ranked in 5th place nationwide in Entrepreneurship Index, trained its students for the world. He stated that Izmir University of Economics showed the way to reach information and use that information. He said, “We are producing qualified graduates needed by the business world. After they succeed in business world, we want them to establish their own businesses. When we were first established in 2001, Turkey was in crisis. Now, in 2013, Turkey is a global power. We are raising our students for the world. The world is your work arena. You are being educated for this reason.”
President Demirtaş stated that Izmir University of Economics reached its goals at a great pace since its establishment. He said, “I always use the proverb, “Big Journeys Start with Small Steps”. We are most definitely satisfied with where we stand, but there is no stopping for us. If we cease, we fall. Therefore, we need to work and produce continuously. We need to run faster. I would like to congratulate all the academicians and students. The graphs reflect our progress. This success belongs to us all. Dear graduates, students, lecturers, rector, there is no stopping now because we succeeded. Ceasing is running behind, it is falling down. I would like to express my gratitude to everybody on behalf of the Board of Trustees.”
Rector Prof. Dr. Tunçdan Baltacıoğlu stated that they were honoured and enthusiastic to be celebrating the 12th establishment anniversary. The Rector said, “Even though Izmir University of Economics, leaving behind 12 years of successful service, might be considered a young institution of higher education, it is a source of pride and honour for us. We have become a very large family with 6 thousand 156 students, 431 permanent lecturers (61 of whom are foreign nationals), and 141 administrative personnel as of 2013. The number of students, who graduated from various levels of education programs we offer, reached to 6 thousand 428. Many of these graduates are employed at recognized national and international companies, as many of them continue with their graduate studies nationwide and abroad. The journey we started with two faculties, two schools, and one graduate school, reached to 7 faculties, 3 schools, 2 graduate schools, and 8 research and application centres. While we were offering 6 programs in 2001, we now have 13 associate degree programs, 31 undergraduate degree programs, 24 graduate degree programs, and 5 Ph.D. programs thus making a total of 74 programs. In addition to our existing programs, Department of Health Management at Faculty of Health Sciences, and Department of Civil Engineering at Faculty of Engineering and Computer Sciences will start education in 2013. Faculty of Medicine is awaiting the YOK approval.”
After the speeches, the participants of 9th International Student Conference were given their awards, and the faculty members, who were promoted to professorship, associate professorship, and assistant professorship, put on their academic robes at the assignment and promotion ceremony. Also, the winners of Cookie Monster contest, held by the Department of Culinary Arts and Management, were given their awards at the ceremony.
At the end of the ceremony, foreign national students from 32 different countries with EXPO scholarships at Izmir University of Economics, presented a t-shirt to President Ekrem Demirtaş with a slogan of “We Believe, We Will Win” on it.
